Rapid Development of Orion Structural Test Systems

NASA has been validating the Orion spacecraft design for human space flight. Three systems we developed play an instrumental role in the testing of the new multipurpose crew vehicle. A custom pressurization and venting system enables engineers to apply pressure inside the test article for measuring strain. A custom data acquisition system synchronizes over 1,800 channels of analog data. This data, along with multiple video and audio streams and calculated data, can be viewed, saved, and replayed in real-time on multiple client stations.

A Test Cell for Mission-Critical Aerospace Gearbox Testing


We designed and built two PXI-based test cells with real time data acquisition and control for testing transmission gearboxes for the Bell Helicopter 525 Relentless drive systems. Bell Helicopter upgraded from PLC-based systems to a test solution that allowed them to standardize control, data acquisition, and vibration monitoring systems on the same hardware and software platforms and thus increase system flexibility and reduce development and maintenance costs. We selected PXI data acquisition and control hardware and developed a flexible software application based on LabVIEW RealTime.
